Abstract

The development of sport tourism-based destinations requires not only tourism potential and supporting infrastructure but also community involvement in sustainable destination management. This study aims to examine the role of community participation and empowerment in supporting the performance of sport tourism destination management based on findings from relevant previous studies. This study employed a literature review method by examining 10 research articles through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that community participation contributes to improving destination management quality through involvement in the planning, implementation, evaluation, and utilization of tourism outcomes. Furthermore, community empowerment through training, mentoring, and capacity-building programs can enhance local communities’ knowledge, skills, and independence in supporting tourism management. In the context of sport tourism, community empowerment is particularly important because sport-based tourism requires competent human resources, adequate facilities, and attention to safety aspects. These findings confirm that community participation and empowerment are mutually supportive in creating effective and sustainable destination management. As a literature review, the findings are conceptual and require further empirical verification in specific destinations, including Embung Waleng Wonogiri.
