Abstract

Crisis situations such as recurring fires and explosions present significant challenges for the maritime industry to address as effectively as possible. These challenges are further complicated by the limited number of previous studies examining the dynamics of maritime emergency management and the inconsistency of findings. This study aims to explore the driving and inhibiting factors of preparedness in facing crisis situations. Another objective is to investigate the role of a Master leadership during crises and the specific forms of leadership exhibited. This qualitative case study employs an in-depth interview approach. The findings reveal that, during crisis situations, a Master must be adaptive, skilled in communication, emotionally intelligent, and capable of fostering a culture of safety and security. The driving factors for crisis preparedness include adherence to safety drills, the quality of the Master internal and external communication, leadership characteristics during crises, and the readiness of safety equipment. Conversely, the inhibiting factors identified include limited human resource competencies, technological and informational constraints, and non-compliance with regulations.
