Abstract

Accidents are not caused by a single failure or error, but are caused by a series of errors. Human error can be described as a decision-making error, an action that is not done correctly. This study aims to test the effect of human factors on shipping safety. Humans have certain abilities and limitations. Human performance is influenced by knowledge and skills. There are many human factors that affect safety in this domain such as fatigue, situational awareness, communication, and stress. The quantitative approach in this study is to test the theory by measuring the variables in this study numerically and analyzing the data using statistical procedures. This study uses a questionnaire as a data collection instrument with a non-probability sampling technique at the Port of Tanjung Perak Surabaya and 120 respondents who participated in this study. The inferential statistical method used in the analysis of research data is Partial Least Square (PLS). The results of the study indicate that human factors have a significant effect on shipping safety. This means that the skill factor of the crew on passenger ships is a mandatory competency that must be possessed to navigate on the high seas and in shipping lanes. Shipping safety is also influenced by communication. Communication is very important, both communication with the port/agent, and communication with the company, especially communication between ships to avoid the danger of collision..
