The Effect of Vermicompost Fertilizer Application and Planting Distance Using Banana Stalk Growing Medium on the Growth of Kale Plants (Brassica Oleracea Var. Acephala)

This study aims to analyze the effect of vermicompost fertilizer application and plant spacing using banana stem (gedebog pisang) as a planting medium on the growth of kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala). The research was conducted using a factorial randomized block design with two factors, namely vermicompost dosage (0 g, 150 g, and 200 g) and plant spacing (10×5 cm, 10×10 cm, and 10×15 cm), with three replications. Observed parameters included number of leaves, leaf area index, chlorophyll content, fresh weight, and dry weight. Data were analyzed using ANOVA followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test at a 5% significance level. The results showed that the interaction between vermicompost dosage and plant spacing significantly affected the number of leaves, leaf area index, and chlorophyll content, but had no significant effect on fresh and dry weight. The best treatment combination was 200 g vermicompost with 10×15 cm spacing (V2J3), which produced the highest number of leaves (10.33 leaves at 42 days after planting), the highest leaf area index (0.45), and increased chlorophyll content. The use of banana stem as a planting medium also demonstrated potential as an environmentally friendly alternative that supports plant growth. In conclusion, the integration of optimal vermicompost dosage and appropriate plant spacing on alternative organic media can enhance the vegetative growth of kale and contribute to sustainable agricultural practices.
