Abstract

Mental health is a crucial aspect of adolescent development because it influences an individual’s ability to manage emotions, adapt to social environments, and cope with life’s challenges. Adolescents living in orphanages are at higher risk for various psychological issues due to limited family support, experiences of loss, and the psychosocial pressures they face. This community service activity aims to improve adolescents’ understanding of mental health, strengthen their emotional management skills, and encourage more open and supportive communication within the orphanage environment. The activity was conducted at the Sonaf Maneka Catholic Orphanage in Kupang City in May 2026, involving 20 adolescents aged 14–18 and several orphanage caregivers. The methods used included a participatory approach through mental health education, group discussions, case studies, training in emotional management techniques, and experience-sharing sessions. Data were collected through observation, informal interviews, documentation, and participants’ verbal evaluations. The results of the activity showed an increase in participants’ understanding of mental health, their ability to recognize emotions, their confidence in expressing opinions, and their basic skills in managing emotions through breathing techniques, positive self-talk, and self-reflection. Participants also demonstrated active participation and provided very positive feedback regarding the activities. This initiative demonstrates that participatory mental health education is effective in enhancing mental health literacy and emotional regulation skills among adolescents in orphanage settings.
