Abstract

The rapid development of generative artificial intelligence has transformed how university students search for, access, and manage academic information. ChatGPT, as one of the most widely used large language model applications, provides instant access to explanations, ideas, and academic support. This study aims to explore Library and Information Science students’ perceptions of ChatGPT in information-seeking activities, focusing on its benefits, challenges, and factors influencing its adoption. A qualitative case study design was used. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with ten purposively selected students who had experience using ChatGPT for academic purposes. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key patterns in students’ experiences and attitudes. The findings show that students perceive ChatGPT as highly useful due to its speed, accessibility, and ability to simplify complex information. It helps them save time, generate ideas, clarify difficult concepts, and support academic tasks. However, students also express concerns about inaccurate information, lack of source transparency, overreliance on AI, and academic integrity issues. Adoption of ChatGPT is influenced by perceived usefulness, ease of use, technological familiarity, and peer or academic environment influences. In conclusion, ChatGPT is considered an effective academic support tool, but its use must be balanced with strong information literacy, critical thinking, and source verification to ensure accuracy and ethical academic practice.
