Abstract

This study aims to: (1) explain the meaning of tolerance in national and civic life; (2) describe the meaning and objectives of multicultural education; and (3) analyze the role of multicultural education in shaping tolerance character. This research uses a qualitative approach with a library research method. Data were collected through literature review and analyzed using a hermeneutic approach. The results show that: (1) tolerance is essential in national and civic life, especially in a pluralistic society. It is important to maintain harmony and peaceful coexistence among diverse groups; (2) multicultural education is important for Indonesian society, especially the younger generation, through formal education. It helps individuals understand and accept diversity as a natural and unavoidable reality, encouraging mutual respect and appreciation; and (3) multicultural education can be integrated into various subjects or courses, such as citizenship education and religious education. Educators can strengthen tolerance character by using online media and combining appropriate teaching methods and learning media. In addition, teachers and lecturers are required to have pedagogical, professional, personal, and social competencies in educating students.
