This research explores the role of design and innovation in enhancing the competitiveness of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) within the creative industry sector using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. The primary focus is to identify trends, challenges, and best practices in the adoption of design and innovation by MSMEs in the fashion, handicraft, and digital design sectors. By analyzing 23 selected articles from the Scopus database over the last decade (2014–2024), this study finds that innovative design has a significant impact on strengthening brand image and improving customer experience, which ultimately boosts sales and business growth. The results indicate that the integration of technologies such as 3D printing and augmented reality (AR), into the design process enables MSMEs to compete in the global market. However, limited access to technology and a lack of skilled labor remain the primary challenges in implementing design innovation. Consequently, cross-sector collaboration, training programs, and supportive government policies are required to foster design and innovation development among MSMEs.
