The accumulation of waste in the Sunter River, particularly at the Pulogadung Pumping Station, can obstruct pump operation and increase the risk of flooding. Conventional cleaning methods using trash barriers and excavators are considered less effective because they often leave residual waste behind. This study aims to design a belt conveyor for waste transportation that is suitable for the operating conditions of the pumping station and to evaluate the structural strength of its supporting frame under the maximum working load. The conveyor was designed using the VDI 2221 design methodology, which covers the stages from planning to detailed design. The structural performance of the conveyor frame was evaluated through Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using SolidWorks simulation software. The frame was modeled using AISI 1020 low-carbon steel and subjected to a static load of 1,000 kg at a conveyor inclination angle of 20°. The selected design has an overall length of 4,458 mm and a 700 mm wide cleated rubber belt driven by a 3 HP three-phase AC motor with a belt speed of 0.5 m/s. The FEA results indicate a maximum von Mises stress of 132.8 MPa, which is well below the yield strength of AISI 1020 steel (351.6 MPa). The maximum displacement was 1.71 mm, while the calculated factor of safety reached 2.6. These results demonstrate that the proposed belt conveyor frame satisfies the structural strength requirements and provides an adequate level of safety, making it a feasible alternative for improving waste transportation at the Pulogadung Pumping Station.
