Abstract

A twin screw air compressor is an important industrial machine whose performance is strongly influenced by its mechanical condition during operation. One of the main parameters used to evaluate machine condition and health is vibration. Excessive vibration may indicate mechanical faults such as mass imbalance, mechanical looseness, and abnormal rotor lobe interaction. This study aims to analyze the vibration characteristics of a twin screw air compressor during operation and to identify fault indications based on frequency spectrum analysis. Vibration measurements were carried out using an Emerson CSI 2130 Machinery Health Analyzer with tri-axial accelerometers at several measurement points on the compressor and electric motor. Time-domain vibration data were processed using the Fast fourier transform (FFT) method to obtain frequency spectra, which were then analyzed based on fundamental frequencies, harmonics, and Lobe mesh frequency (LMF). The vibration amplitude results were compared with ISO 10816- 3 standard to evaluate machine condition. The analysis results show dominant frequencies at 0.5× RPM and 1× RPM indicating mechanical looseness and mass imbalance, as well as the appearance of a frequency around 253 Hz and its harmonics identified as lobe mesh frequency. Evaluation based on ISO 10816-3 indicates that the machine vibration condition ranges from acceptable to dangerous zones at certain measurement points. This study can be used as a basis for machine condition assessment and maintenance recommendations.
