The development of technology and social media has brought changes to students' communication patterns in everyday life. The use of digital applications such as WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, and Telegram has led students to increasingly use short, practical, and easy-to-understand language. This form of communication is characterized by the dominant use of acronyms and acronyms in digital conversations. The use of language such as "bgt", "udh", "OTW", and various other abbreviations is thought to accelerate message delivery and create more efficient communication. However, the continued use of acronyms and acronyms is suspected to affect the use of formal Indonesian, especially in academic settings. This study aims to determine the effect of the dominance of acronyms and acronyms on the use of formal Indonesian in digital communication by students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Medan (UNMED). This study used a quantitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were obtained through questionnaires distributed to students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Medan (UNMED). The results showed that the use of acronyms and acronyms in digital communication is at a fairly high level and has an impact on students' habits in using formal Indonesian. Some students still frequently use informal language in writing assignments, academic messages, and other official communications. Therefore, awareness is needed in the use of formal Indonesian so that students are able to adjust their language use according to the context of academic communication and digital communication.
